Slipped Disc

Slipped DiscThere is no other problem of the back more common than slipped disc. Our Spine is made up of many small bones called Vertebrae with many networks of nerves surrounding it. These are cushioned between tough flexible discs made up of cartilage. When one of these discs is dislocated or presses out of the arrangement, it causes severe pain in the area.  It usually happens in the back or lower making back pain very common. Excessive stress on the vertebrae during sports or a continuous sitting position are the common causes. This can hamper normal life rendering it impossible to travel or even work at home.

What Doctors suggest? Orthopedic suggest medicines along with prolonged of rest for recovery. It takes long time to recover from slipped disc. Elderly people are recommended to take complete rest.

Lumbar Disc Herniation

Sometimes excessive stress on a part of the vertebrae causes tearing of the outer layer of the disc and the exposed part gradually extrudes. This is known as Lumbar Disc Herniation in medical terms. There are no specific reasons which can cause this. Any continuous stressful activity can be the cause of herniation of the Disc. In many cases it is simply an age related problem. Many people complain of lower back pain and leg pain resulting from this problem. Bending or other activities excruciates the pain. As the entire spinal cord is a collaborated network, the pain can be felt in the neck and legs also.

What Doctors suggest? Both medication and physiotherapy can be useful to combat the pain. Doctors suggest that applying ice on the painful area and massaging will help to bring down the pain. Applying heated towel is also observed to be beneficial. In worst cases, surgeries are also considered.

Lumbar Disc Degeneration Disease

It is a condition caused by some small trauma or accident which progresses with time resulting in the compression of the disc. This may lead to inflammation in the area and related problems.

What Doctors Suggest ? Commonly DDD is treated with non-surgical measures like heat or ice therapy, stretching exercises, muscle relaxation therapy etc.

Sciatica

SciaticaIt emerges as a result of slipped Disc or Disc Degeneration Disease. The degenerated disc, in some cases, presses on the sciatic nerve which a nerve is emerging from the lower back running to the legs. This causes severe pain in limbs and the lower back. In severe cases, there is frequent sprain in the limbs and extreme pain that may give sleepless nights to the patient.

What is Sciatic Nerve? It is a crucial nerve in our body originating from the hip area and running into the limbs. It is very close to the main vertebrae. So a disc that is dislocated or degenerated, in some cases, it reaches the nerves and presses it disturbing its functioning. This condition is commonly referred to as Sciatica.

What Doctors Suggest? There are people who have to undergo surgery for persistence sciatica despite of medicines and exercises. But many middle aged and even old people manage sciatica with painkillers and nutrient supplements. Exercises, as guided by Orthopedic or Physiotherapist, help control sciatica from progressing.

Isthmic Spondylolisthesis

If one is experiencing frequent tightening of the limb muscles, occasional irregularity in walking pattern as if losing control over the limbs, pain in the lower back with muscle spasms, he might be suffering from Isthmic Spondylolisthesis. It occurs as a result of one upper column of vertebra emerging over the column of vertebra below. This progresses gradually to disturb the surrounding nerves.

What Doctors suggest? In severe cases, when medicines fail, doctors suggest steroids. Patients also go for surgeries in the worst cases. In less severe cases short term bed rest and anti-inflammatory medicines help to control the pain.

Dr. Sanjay Parashar, Cocoona Hospita , opines that once a spinal or neck pain emerges, one should not delay in consulting an orthopedic. Seeking immediate treatment is very crucial for controlling these problems.
